We caught up with Toronto based Youtuber Anna from the channel 'There She Goes' to talk all things thrifting, vintage and personal style! Check out our interview below and get to know our current girl crush a little better....
1. How old were you when you started developing your own personal style?
I think I really started to develop my own personal style at 21, and I say 21 because that was when I truly felt like myself and confident with my style.
2. What was it that drew you to thrifting and vintage clothing?
The hunt. There's something about spending hours and hours sifting through racks and rummaging through bins that intrigues me. I love digging my way through and looking for treasure when it comes to thrift and vintage shops. And I always find it a different experience every time I shop because there's constantly new items that come out.
3. What is your earliest fashion memory?
My earliest fashion memory was in elementary school. It was such an experimental phase in my life where I loved to dress like my brothers. I remember I would go through my brother's closets and try on their clothes. I would even get their hand-me-downs and I remember feeling so comfortable dressing up in their baggy clothes!
4. Where do you get your style inspiration from?
I get inspired by people watching. Sounds creepy, but I promise you it's not. Whenever I'm out and about I'm always admiring what people are wearing. I also get inspired through social media-- I always find myself scrolling through Instagram and Pinterest.
5. If you had to pick an era other than now to live in, which would it be and why?
Definitely the 70's era. I would have loved to grow up on the fashion and music era because I feel like everyone was so free and expressive. And not to mention I would have loved to go to festivals and discos back in the 70's.
6. Do you have any tips for buying vintage/second hand?
Research: Google is your best friend when it comes to shopping vintage or second hand. Everything is so easily accessible where you can find reviews of stores and find great locations.
Go in with an open mind: You never know what you're going to find so it's best to not have any expectations-- just go for it.
Always check for spots, stains, rips, tears: Especially since everything is second hand. Most vintage shops are curated so you won't have to worry about that, but if you're thrift store shopping I would always check for stains.
Bring a friend: It's always fun shopping with a friend, especially one that loves vintage/second hand. They can give you their opinion and also keep on eye out for any items that you might like!
Have fun: You got to have fun in order to enjoy yourself. Vintage/second hand shopping is all about the experience. The set up of a shop, decor, unique clothing pieces, and the shop owner! It's all about the experience for me.
7. What will be your autumn/winter staple?
Faux Leopard print coat. It's bold, beautiful, and it's definitely warm!
8. What are your future plans for your youtube videos and content?
I would love to travel and visit different vintage/thrift shops around the world. I think that experience will be thrilling for me and my viewers. :)
