Interview with YouTuber Lidi Smith | Bloggers

An interview with Lidi on self expression, confidence and YouTube

By: Carrie-Anne Phillipson

When and how did you find the YouTube fashion community and when did you start making videos of your own?

"I think I was around 13 when I found YouTube and I always looked up to and admired the girls on there but was far too nervous to make my own videos! ... I didn't start making my own 'til I was 16 - other than a silly hairstyle tutorial with no talking in it when I was 14 - but it wasn't until I was older that I started taking it seriously."

When did you get into fashion and experimenting with your style? What/who were your early influences?

"Well, ever since I can remember I've loved feeling unique with my style but it was probably at around the age of 14 when I actually started getting into fashion. I'm now a fashion student in Manchester but back then I had no idea what I wanted to do I just enjoyed being creative with my looks so I didn't really have any famous or well known influences - I just loved women on the Internet, in particular on Tumblr and YouTube but I guess an example would be Kayla Hadlington."

Always a tough one but how would you describe your style?

"I get asked this question so much and it's so hard to answer but I always just say 'alternative', like I have to admit I have phases of dressing in a way that could be associated with certain stereotypes but I hate to categorise people - I say just wear what you want and feel good, ya know?"

"If you feel like you look good then flaunt it!"

Any specific tips on wearing what you want and confidence?

"It's easy to say 'oh, just wear what you want' but it's another thing to feel confident doing it. It's taken me a long time to feel confident in myself. I still have days when I just feel like I look horrific but the main thing is to just learn to forget about what others think and just care about yourself - sounds self-centred but at the end of the day if you feel good then who cares what anyone else thinks? The confidence will come with time but just remember if you feel like you look good then flaunt it!"

Wise words! Last one: Where do you think fashion will take you in the future?

"I'm studying fashion design so it's already a huge part of my life and takes up pretty much all of my time! I mean, the dream would be to have my own clothing line - I'm still unsure whether I'd prefer to do womens or menswear but it's all very exciting. I don't like to plan things out too much, I sort of like living in the moment, as cliché as that sounds. I think a career in fashion is definitely on the cards - fashion will always be important to me."
